The
diversity of the landlocked, mountainous country is the essence of
Switzerland and gives the country its unique identity. Still, it is
best known for its financial institutions, fine cheeses and chocolate,
watch making industry, for its scenery and an excellent network of
public transportation.

The sky is a perfect blue, the water of the lake is clear and
calm. The mountains are ochre, violet and snowcoloured. All the magic
of a Hermann Hesse's description springs forth along the footpath that
winds from Gandria, amid olive trees and dry stone walls.
There are
almost unbelievably mild winters on the Rivapiana, where Lake Maggiore
leaves the fog behind and meets Locarno, while the beauty of sweet
shrubs, mimosas and camellias bursts into life, the fragile expressions
of a forthcoming spring.
The gateway to Italianità

The gateway to Italianità
Bellinzona appeared to the traveller of old approaching from the South
as the key to the Alps while for those approaching it from the North,
it was the gateway to Italy.
Many modern tourists know the town only
because they have passed through it on the way to their holiday resorts
on the Mediterranean. But it really is worth making a stop in Bellinzona itself some time.
The town has a rich, mediaeval heritage with three citadels that tower
over the town as if watching over it.
And once you reach the mild
temperatures South of the Alps, you start to note the I talianità - or
Italian-ness - of the little town with its market, open-air concerts
and outdoor restaurants in which so many Ticino specialities can be
sampled.
5 Good Reasons To Visit Bellinzona: The Mediaeval Fortress with the three castles - Castelgrande, Castello di Montebello and Castello di Sasso Corbaro. The reopened theatre in Italian style - built 1847 and restored in 1997.
The picturesque market in the Old Town on Saturday afternoons. Open-air events in Summer - Music Festival, theatre and ballet. The city art gallery in the Villa dei Cedri with regular art exhibitions.
LAKE MAGGIORE, a land of colour and passion
In a part of Switzerland which has always been a magnet for visitors on
account of its warmth and Mediterranean light, Lake Maggiore has been
attracting visitors for over 100 years. The lake, which was a
particular passion for Stendhal and other writers, seems to exert an irresistible fascination.
But why did
naturists, visionaries and Utopians who dreamt of a new world and a
better way of life choose to plant their colonies here? Why, after the
war, did European writers, artists and intellectuals, from Hesse to
Remarque, from Frisch to Highsmith, from Jawlenski to Max Ernst, decide
to live there? There is an answer, and it's the one the tourists give.
Here palm trees grow next to chestnuts and between the dry stone walls
there's the agave; here the walks above the lake offer views which
remind one of the Côte d'Azur; here the air is scented with jasmine,
the light has the intense colours and reflections of the south, and
even life promises to be easier...
Lake
Maggiore is the image of the South - a surprising and magical South,
near the heart of Europe, with the Alps as a backdrop. Within a few
kilometres you can leave behind the gentle shores of the lake with its
lively towns and palm trees and discover the enchantment of the
majestic green valleys, leading up to peaks of over 3,000 metres with
glaciers and breathtaking Alpine scenery, dotted with little villages
of stone houses hidden away in the chestnut forests, and traversed by
rivers where the water is the colour of emerald. As a land of emotions
and contrasts Lake Maggiore is the ideal destination for your holidays.
There's everything: unspoilt nature, spectacular scenery, the best
climate in Switzerland, major cultural events, beaches, lake shores, an
early spring, a golden autumn, wine and food specialities, and an
infinite number of possibilities for excursions and for every kind of
physical activity, from golf to the extreme sports like canyoning and
the best bungee jumping in Switzerland.

ASCONA, art, prestige and exclusive holidays
Ascona lies in a spectacular sunny bay on Lake Maggiore. It's one of
the best loved and most exclusive tourist destinations in Switzerland.
Here you can find
everything for a VIP holiday far from noise and prying eyes: some of
the most prestigious hotels in Switzerland, a magnificent 18-hole golf
course, smart boutiques, a large welcoming Lido, gastronomic
restaurants and magnificent walks in the surroundings.
The old town was built around the 16th century church of SS. Pietro e
Paolo, and exerts a special fascination: an intricate web of lanes
containing every kind of shop leads to the piazza, which lies directly
on the lake. The panorama opens out over the lake: here's the famous
lakefront with its cafés and tables in the sunshine.
Here you can stroll
around and live outside even in winter. Welcome to Switzerland's
southernmost and sunniest terrace, with evening shows, markets, and
open-air festivals with traditional food and drink, and in June and
July the stage for the most important classical jazz festival in
Europe. Art and culture are at home in Ascona.
The birthplace of the great artist Giovanni Serodine (1600-1630),
Ascona offers its cosmopolitan clientele interesting museums and art
galleries and a famous festival of classical music, which is nearly 60
years old.
Ascona had its most extraordinary cultural experience at the
beginning of the 20th century, when a group of people who advocated a
return to nature settled on the Monte Verità. In the following years a
cultural and spiritual project developed around this settlement which
involved revolutionaries, philosophers, writers, poets, dancers and
artists of international fame.
The psychoanalyst Karl Jung, the writer
Hermann Hesse, the artists Alexei Jawlensky and Marianne von Werefkin
were just some of those who lived (and often bought a house) in Ascona.

JazzAscona
New Orleans & Classics is today one of the two big world events
devoted to traditional jazz. During its 22 years ofexistence, the
festival hosted many legends of New Orleans jazz, as well as the
principal artists on the traditional and classical jazzscene worldwide.
The concerts range from traditional New Orleans to Chicago-style jazz,
from swing to mainstream, including ragtime, gospel, blues, and R&B.
When and where do the concerts take place?
JazzAscona will feature an average of 20 daily concerts for a total of
about 400 hours of music. The bands invited to perform are 35, for a
total of about 250 musicians.
The concerts start at 10 am and go on until 4 am the following morning.
About half of them take place on 8 stages in bars, restaurants, and
hotels (often on outdoor terraces), while the other half takes place in
the evening on the romantic lakeside, where thousands of people attend
about fifteen outdoor concerts on the five main stages, from 8 pm to 1
am. Night owls can also attend the jam sessions that go on until
dawn...
Please note that
Ascona is a small town (the historical center is closed to traffic!)
and concerts are easily accessible, only a few minutes away on foot
from stage to stage.

CAMELIE & GIARDINI 2007 11th Camellia's Exibition
Locarno, Parco delle Camelie
5th - 9th April 2007
LOCARNO,
the Lady of the Camellias
Famous for its climate, the mildest in Switzerland, with around 2,300
hours of sunshine per year, and for its International Film Festival,
which takes place in August, Locarno is a small town which has spread
over the wide delta of the river Maggia.
The sunny banks of Lake
Maggiore, the Mediterranean flora in its parks, the entirely Italian
charm of the centre, and the various opportunities for relaxation, as
well as a wide range of hotels are all an invitation to stay. Locarno
is dominated by the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso and lies at the foot
of majestic green valleys which lead up to the glaciers; it has been an
important tourist destination for over a century. Locarno is a starting
point for many excursions up the valleys or around the lake, and it is
also a beach resort, particularly animated during the summer with music
in the squares, cultural events and a lively nightlife. Thanks to the
favourable climate, spring comes early.
Lovers of nature are
drawn by the spectacular shows of camelias, mimosa and magnolias, which
often flower in February when the mountain tops are still covered in
snow. The clear autumn days attract those who are looking for a quiet
stay with excursions.
Locarno with its surrounding area has a population of about
25,000. In Roman times it was already an important strategic and
commercial centre. The past is visible today in monuments such as the
Visconti Castle with its impressive fortified tower, old churches and
elegant houses of the old nobility. Piazza Grande, from which narrow
streets lead up to the picturesque Old Town (Città Vecchia), is one of
the largest and most famous squares in Switzerland. This is the meeting
place and heart of the town, and the main commercial activity takes
place here: on Thursdays there is the popular market, and in August the
evening screenings of the world-famous Film Festival.

Estival Jazz, open-air music festival
Thursday, 5 July 07 - Saturday, 7 July 07
Category:
Festival, Festivities
Description:
What other jazz festival can offer the attraction of more than a dozen
concerts over a period of five evenings? Yet it is not so much the
number of concerts that is amazing, but the standard of music on offer.
In fact, as usual, the bill includes some of the best known names in
the worldwide jazz scene, artists who will liven up the town's squares
and fully meet the expectations of an ever more numerous and
enthusiastic public.
Among others: The Wailers, Charlie Hunter Trio, Soul Survivors, Yes, Pat Metheny Trio, Dee Dee Bridgewater.
With its characteristic small alleys, the
arcades of old Patrician homes, valuable architectural monuments and its
natural beauty, Morcote, a village situated on the lakefront, 10 kilometres
from Lugano, is considered „the Pearl of Ceresio". Of particular
architectural interest, is the church of Santa Maria del Sasso, the terraced
cemetery and the Tower of the captain. For those who love the nature and peace
of these places, the beautiful Scherrer
garden, full of exquisite subtropical flora on the lakefront, is the
perfect setting. Morcote has all the characteristics for tourists to feel
welcome as guests and offers various excursions and other relaxing
opportunities.
Lying at the lowest point in Switzerland, just 197 metres above sea
level, and perched between the shores of Lake Maggiore and the steep
mountains behind, Brissago is a small town on the Italian frontier.
Brissago is famous not
only for its tobacco and cigar factory, but also for its islands, which
seen from above look like bright green spots in the blue of the lake.
Between 1885 and 1928 Baroness Antonietta Saint-Léger, a Russian of
German origin, planted a botanical garden designed as an earthly
paradise, and her successor, the department store king Max Emden,
continued her work.
Today the neo-classical
villa contains a restaurant and the administration offices o f the
Botanical Park of Canton Ticino. Their plants are still there, together
with the Himalayan cinnamon with its scent of camphor, the Madagascar
gladiolus, the bald cypress from the swamps of North America with its
trunk under water, and numerous other exotic species.
The islands of Brissago are easy to reach by boat, have the mildest
climate in Switzerland, and can be best admired from Ronco s/Ascona, a
little village caressed by the sun, situated on the slopes of the
mountain and characterised by the church of San Martino, which
dominates the surrounding countryside.
The hill between Ronco and Monte
Verità above Ascona is the site of luxury villas, and the view can be
enjoyed from one of the spectacular footpaths.
Here, especially on
clear winter and spring days, you can discover all the charm of the
south: mimosas and agave grow between the walls and the view over the
lake is of a rare beauty.
The botanical garden has a collection of plants from all over the
world. Around 1,500 species, most of them from the southern hemisphere,
as well as from the Mediterranean and the Far East: the Himalayas,
China, Japan.
The
Park was laid out in 1885 by Baroness Antoinette de Saint-Léger.
Today
it is part of the canton of Ticino. Guided tours of the park and the
small island are possible, upon request.
How to get there: By boat: from the villages along the Lago Maggiore (regular service).
Opening hours: Open from the end of March to the end of October, 9am to 6 p.m.
